Antibiotic free farming – how to limit antibiotics?

Antibiotics should only be used as a last resort to cure animals and never as a management tool to mask failure in the management of farms.  There is more and more evidence that veterinary antibiotics causes resistant pathogens and spread in the environment. In organic farming a large part of farmers use very little or no antibiotics at all and prove that it is possible to manage a dairy herd in an animal friendly way and in good health. Health promotion and prevention are the main issues in limiting medicine use. That starts with a balance between the requirements of the animals and the possibilities of the farm (management).
